Smoke bomb photography has just grown so much in popularity in recent years. The results can be brilliant, eye-catching and fun! But you’ve got to be careful and take things seriously too. Here are some hints and tips, as well as behind the scenes, of two weddings where I’ve used smoke bombs.

Smoke Bomb Wedding Photography Tips

  • Always check your surroundings! You need somewhere secluded, with nothing that can be damaged, and no people to get in the way.

  • Remember we are playing with explosives here. Sort of. But really! Have a sand bucket, or water, at the ready to extinguish your smoke bombs

  • Be sober. Sorry guys! Health and Safety hat on here! Don’t let anyone handle smoke grenades if they’re too tipsy.

  • Keep coloured smoke grenades away from dresses! I’ve heard some horror stories. If you REALLY want smoke bombs at your wedding, but are worried about getting colour on your dress, opt for the white ones. They’re great and much less risky.

  • Call it off if it’s too windy. It just isn’t worth it.

  • Have a dry run with what you’d like to do when the smoke bomb is active, whether that’s having a dance, a smooch, a giggle, or a hug. You only have a short period of time to get it right so be prepared.

Safety first. And also don’t forget to have fun :)
